PpcSoft iKnow features - Capture Web pages
Capture Web pages
|
You can capture web pages/documents by using the 'Capture/Web page' button or shortcut key Alt + C (Capture).
PpcSoft iKnow will minimize, and you must then click the document you want to capture. PpcSoft iKnow will then automatically capture multiple pages from the web page/document.

When completed capturing the document, it will show the 'Paste Web Link' dialog where you can preview the image and crop it to remove unnecessary parts.
Also note in the screenshot that the URL and title has been captured automatically.
Hyperlinks with preview
When you capture a web document, a hyperlink will be created with the given title (which you can change) that links to the original web page (URL).
However, the screenshot of the page(s) will also be saved, meaning that captured web links will have two functions:
- Preview web page using the snapshot when hovering over the link with your mouse
- Open the web page using your default browser when clicking the link
The screenshot is copied to the clipboard, so you may choose to close the 'Paste Web Link' dialog, and then paste the image into a dedicated paint application instead for further editing. When you've completed your changes, you can paste it back into PpcSoft iKnow if you wish. But please note that it will then be saved as an ordinary image, not as a web link.
PpcSoft iKnow will only save one preview image for each web address, so if you copy the hyperlink to other notes they will all link to the same preview image. This will save space, but it also means that if you capture an updated image from the same web page later, all your links to this URL will automatically use the updated preview image.
Zoom for offline reading
You may choose to use the preview as a 'reminder' if you're unsure what the web page is about, but you can also use the preview as an 'offline' copy for reading.
If you zoom the preview you can 'read' the image instead of opening the web page at all. A zoomed web preview which consists of several pages can even be viewed one page at a time - use your arrow keys to go to the next/previous page.
In addition, if you capture a web page using less than half the width of your screen, previewing the captured web page(s) in full-screen zoomed mode will automatically show two (or more) pages next to each other to fully take advantage of your screen space.
Being able to capture web pages and hyperlinks in one go is very helpful when doing research on the web. And even if you capture several pages from each web site, you can still capture lots of images in each note as all images are loaded dynamically when you move your mouse over the links, not when you open the note.

Web clipping / Screen clipping
In this example you can see that several pages has been captured. The hyperlink URL has also been captured. |
|
Crop and preview image
You may crop the image to remove unnecessary parts. In this example the top, left and right sections has been removed - leaving only the main article. Preview will use the entire window to get a closer look. |
|
AutoPreview image
When moving your mouse over a link you'll see an autopreview of the image. If you click the hyperlink, the web page will open. If you enable zoom (Alt+Z or Ctrl+MouseWheel) you'll get the next image... |
|
AutoPreview image Zoomed
If your captured document is less than half the width of your active window, PpcSoft iKnow will automatically show two (or more) 'pages' of the image side-by-side. You can then use the arrow keys to show the next/previous pages. |
Capture the text from web pages ?
The web capture will only grab an image of the web page, not the text itself.
We don't recommend that you 'dump' complete web pages into iKnow (you can if you want to; just select all (Ctrl+A) and copy it (Ctrl+C) and then paste it into iKnow).
Everything you paste (text) into iKnow will be searchable, and the more unnecessary 'junk' you add the more difficult searching for what you actually need will be. This is the reason iKnow won't grab all the text automatically for you - we recommend you only grab the parts you need and copy them into iKnow to maintain quality over quantity.
